I've lived in Uptown for about 12 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I'm still on the fence after all this time. When I first moved here from Raleigh, I was surprised by food scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- The cost of living scene is improving
The downsides:
- Dating scene is rough
- Far from beaches/mountains

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a contractor who relocated here from Nashville about 7 years ago. The main reasons were weather and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Active local events and festivals
- Four distinct seasons
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Dating scene is rough
Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are developing, gas is better than expected.
Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Definitely worth checking out..

I've lived in North for about 3 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I genuinely enjoy living here. When I first moved here from Baltimore, I was surprised by school system. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

- Strong job market in several industries
- The traffic scene is pretty good
The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Chain restaurants dominate
Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for young professionals. No regrets on my end..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 9 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in North. It's surprisingly good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in marketing. If you're in consulting you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like Thai.
