Moving to Long Beach with kids -good idea?

Random thought, Average temperature is around 53--F, so expect cold winters. Homes are going for about $661,500 on average. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Worth the trade-offs? It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Night life is decent if you know the right spots.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 8 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. When I first moved here from Nashville, I was surprised by cultural scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Active local events and festivals
- Four distinct seasons
- The pet-friendliness scene is average

The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Limited shopping options

Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for retirees. No regrets on my end..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a teacher who relocated here from Portland about 4 years ago. The main reasons were weather and a fresh start.

Pros I've experienced:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Lots of new development happening
- Good airport with direct flights

Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Chain restaurants dominate

Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are manageable, gas is better than expected.

Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. It's not for everyone but it works for us..
