Curious what people think. Rent is about $1,744/month for a decent place. Crime rate is something to consider -Long Branch sits at 359.1 per 100K. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Should I be concerned? Any help is appreciated.

Bought a house here in 2024 and it's not perfect but it works for me. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

As someone who grew up here, I love the pace of life here. A lot has changed in the past few years though. housing market used to be much affordable but now it's average.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Internet is better than expected in most areas.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Charlotte and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Riverside. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in education. If you're in real estate you might struggle.
People: Generally better than expected. It took about 17 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: solid. Tons of options if you like Mediterranean.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Downtown. It's underrated for what you get.
Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in retail. If you're in engineering you might struggle.
People: Generally solid. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Mexican.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

I've lived in Highland for about 12 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I'm still on the fence after all this time. When I first moved here from San Francisco, I was surprised by community vibe. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- The pet-friendliness scene is surprisingly good
The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Chain restaurants dominate
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for young professionals. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
