Moving to Louisville/Jefferson County - reality check needed

Hey everyone,

I work remote and chose Louisville/Jefferson County specifically for the lifestyle. Downtown has improved dramatically since I first moved here.

A friend just bought in Germantown for K and I'm not sure if that was smart. With a population of 627,210, the city has a {city_feel}.

The school system in Germantown is actually decent. I feel like Louisville/Jefferson County is becoming more expensive without getting better.

Roast me or validate me, I can take it.

Honestly it depends on what you prioritize. If good schools matters most, then yeah Louisville/Jefferson County is great. But if you need beach access, might want to look at Prospect instead.

We pay /mo in Portland for a 3-bed and I could find cheaper but love the neighborhood. I don't understand why more people don't talk about {hood}.

Moved here from Raleigh and I'd say Grocery prices are creeping up but still manageable.. The traffic here is great compared to what I'm used to.

OK let me break this down from someone who's been here a while.

Old Louisville vs Anchorage: completely different vibes. Old Louisville is more solid with a younger crowd and nightlife. Anchorage is growing and better for students.

Cost-wise, expect /mo minimum for anything decent in Old Louisville. In Anchorage you can find stuff for /mo.

The food scene in {hood} is honestly incredible.. The {industry} scene here is really picking up.

Let me give you the perspective nobody asked for but everyone needs.

I've lived in Anchorage, Clifton, and currently in Crescent Hill. Each one feels like a different city honestly.

Rent comparison:
- Anchorage: /mo for a 1-bed
- Clifton: about /mo
- Crescent Hill: /mo but great

The community in {hood} is really tight-knit.. The key is finding your neighborhood. Once you do, Louisville/Jefferson County really clicks.

Renter's perspective: honestly it's worth it. I'm in Cherokee Park area and it's hit or miss. Definitely shop around though.

I've lived in NuLu, St. Matthews, and currently in Butchertown. Each one feels like a different city honestly.

Rent comparison:
- NuLu: /mo for a 3-bed
- St. Matthews: about /mo
- Butchertown: /mo but solid

The weather took some getting used to but I actually love it now.. The key is finding your neighborhood. Once you do, Louisville/Jefferson County really clicks.

I'd highly recommend checking out Portland. The weather took some getting used to but I actually love it now.. Plus the food options around there are pretty good.

I'll give you a thorough answer since I've been through this exact situation.

I moved to Germantown from Raleigh about 3 years ago. Initially I loved it immediately. But after settling in, Cost of living is {col_feel} compared to where I came from..

A few things I'd recommend:
- Check out Germantown and Clifton for housing
- Don't judge the whole city by downtown
- Check out the local brewery scene

The biggest adjustment was nightlife. Honestly the biggest downside is {downside}.. Overall I'd give Louisville/Jefferson County a 9/10 for retirees.

Great question. Here's my honest take after 6 years:

The good:
- Nice downtown area
- Strong local businesses
- Lots of new restaurants opening

The not-so-good:
- Sprawl is real
- Wind never stops

I've never felt unsafe walking around {hood} at night.. I'd say for singles, Louisville/Jefferson County is great.

Parent of two in Clifton. Schools are improving here. Nightlife is decent if you know where to go.. Would recommend visiting before deciding.
