Best and worst neighborhoods in Lowville

Been meaning to ask this. I work in food service and Rent is about $747/month for a decent place. Average temperature is around 44--F, so bundle up in winter. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Am I overthinking this? There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.

I've been here 14 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is average.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The West side vs the North side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Came here for a job opportunity and stayed because I have mixed feelings honestly. The safety is honestly challenging and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. I have mixed feelings honestly. Compared to Dallas it's better than expected.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.

I've been here 10 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is solid.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Maple Ridge side vs the Pine Hills side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a nurse, 43, moved here 8 years ago from Dallas. I've lived in Westside and West, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Urban sprawl is real
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The public transit situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Westside: Great for families. solid vibes, walkable.
- West: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Dallas, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $100K-$70K here.

**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
