Rent vs buy in Lucerne Valley -what makes sense?

Hey folks, It's a a small town city with about 5,946 people. With a population of 5,946, Lucerne Valley is a small town. Homes are going for about $240,000 on average. Crime rate is something to consider -Lucerne Valley sits at 854.7 per 100K. The city has invested a lot in new development. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The suburbs are where most families end up.

I've lived in Maple Ridge for about 14 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's not perfect but it works for me. When I first moved here from Miami, I was surprised by dating scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- The healthcare scene is improving

The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Property taxes are high

Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for remote workers. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a data analyst, 49, moved here 2 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in West and Old Town, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Active local events and festivals
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Homeless population growing downtown
3. The public transit situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- West: Great for singles. surprisingly good vibes, walkable.
- Old Town: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Baltimore, everything felt surprisingly good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $90K-$130K here.

**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I've lived in The Heights for about 4 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I genuinely enjoy living here. When I first moved here from Salt Lake City, I was surprised by traffic. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Lots of new development happening
- The pet-friendliness scene is better than expected

The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Limited high-paying job options

Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for remote workers. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.

I've been here 14 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the healthcare is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is challenging.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Fairview side vs the Meadowbrook side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Hope this helps!.
