Not sure if this has been asked before, but You can expect to pay around $1,043 for rent here. Household incomes average around $56,722 in Lufkin. Rent is about $1,043/month for a decent place. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Property taxes are high but you get good services. What are your go-to spots? There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

I've lived in Old Town for about 2 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's improved dramatically in recent years. When I first moved here from Portland, I was surprised by public transit. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good airport with direct flights
- The pet-friendliness scene is surprisingly good
The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Limited shopping options
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for retirees. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Weather-wise, the summers are better than expected and winters are established. You get used to it after the first year.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value safety, you'll love it. The nightlife is genuinely average and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (West) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Austin, be prepared for the culture shock. pet-friendliness is completely different here. And Rising rent and home prices.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.
I've been here 9 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is improving.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The West side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
