**Employment:**
government is strong here. manufacturing is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are growing for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's exactly what I was looking for. The outdoor scene is pretty good - we have national forests within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Sunset schools are tough. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Chain restaurants dominate. Can feel isolated. And housing market can be frustrating.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value school system, you'll love it. The community vibe is genuinely average and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (The Heights) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Boston, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Can feel isolated.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I'm a contractor who relocated here from Boston about 2 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and a fresh start.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Good healthcare facilities
- Close to major attractions

Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Homeless population growing downtown

Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are reasonable, gas is better than expected.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 2 years ago from Pittsburgh and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Fairview. It's challenging for what you get.

Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in construction. If you're in real estate you might struggle.

People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: surprisingly good. Tons of options if you like Indian.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.

I've been here 5 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is cultural scene. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is solid.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Sunset side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Background: I'm a lawyer, 28, moved here 15 years ago from Dallas. I've lived in South and Old Town, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
