Thinking about relocating to Machesney Park from Salt Lake City

Been meaning to ask this. Military spouse here. The unemployment rate is 4.1%, which is about average. Poverty rate is 8.2%, which is pretty low. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The weather takes some getting used to. The suburbs are where most families end up. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

Public transit is average here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I have mixed feelings honestly.

Came here for quality of life and stayed because it exceeded my expectations. The public transit is honestly challenging and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 13 years ago from San Francisco and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in The Heights. It's excellent for what you get.

Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in education. If you're in retail you might struggle.

People: Generally underrated. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like seafood.

No regrets on my end..

Weather-wise, the summers are hit or miss and winters are pricey. You get used to it after the first year.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Compared to Phoenix it's surprisingly good.
