Curious what people think. We're a young couple and Homes are going for about $448,000 on average. It's a a small town city with about 4,182 people. Rent is about $1,847/month for a decent place. The suburbs are where most families end up. The weather takes some getting used to. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Thoughts? Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The weather takes some getting used to. Public transit is surprisingly good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.
I've been here 14 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the dating scene is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is average.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The East side vs the South side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Definitely worth checking out..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a data analyst, 55, moved here 4 years ago from Dallas. I've lived in West and Midtown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Dating scene is rough
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The food scene situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- West: Great for singles. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- Midtown: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Dallas, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $60K-$100K here.
**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Came here for a job opportunity and stayed because it exceeded my expectations. The nightlife is honestly excellent and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Used to live on the Cedar Grove side, now on the Springfield side. Completely different vibe. it was the best decision I ever made.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 13 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's not perfect but it works for me. When I first moved here from Phoenix, I was surprised by community vibe. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The housing market scene is improving
The downsides:
- Limited public transit options
- Dating scene is rough
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for young professionals. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
