Moving to Madison — what should I know?

I got a job offer in Madison, WI and I'm seriously considering the move. I'm coming from a large city. A few questions:

1. Which neighborhoods should I look at for a $1100-1600 budget?
2. How's the commute situation?
3. Is the crime rate accurate for day-to-day life?
4. Any hidden costs I should know about?

Thanks in advance!

Downtown is overrated and overpriced. The suburbs offer way better value.

Rent tip: look for places in January-February. Prices drop and there's more availability.

As someone who moved here from Boston, I can confirm most of this. The friendliness of people surprised me the most.

I've lived in Downtown for 3 years and it's still one of the best decisions I made.

Check out the Maple Heights area. Way more affordable and still close to everything.

Weather is the biggest factor for us. Four seasons are nice, not too extreme either way.

I work in retail and finding a job wasn't hard. Took about 2 months.

Public transit needs work but they're investing in it. Should improve in next few years.

If you can afford it, Northside is the best place to live. Period.

Can confirm the safety issue. But it really depends on the neighborhood. Northside and Lakewood are perfectly safe.

Great post! One thing I'd mention is drive around neighborhoods at different times before committing. Makes a big difference.

Coming from Chicago, the cost of living difference is noticeable. Groceries and gas are about the same.

Good summary. I'd rate it higher personally — maybe 9/10.
