Starting a business in Manistee?

Random thought, Born and raised here. With a population of 6,275, Manistee is a small town. Crime rate is something to consider -Manistee sits at 376.9 per 100K. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Should I be concerned? Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

Public transit is decent here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's exactly what I was looking for.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a software engineer, 47, moved here 4 years ago from Phoenix. I've lived in North and Lakewood, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Nice parks and green spaces
2. Good healthcare facilities
3. Strong job market in several industries
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Property taxes are high
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The food scene situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- North: Great for remote workers. tough vibes, walkable.
- Lakewood: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Phoenix, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $60K-$100K here.

**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.

I've been here 10 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is food scene. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is underrated.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Sunset side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

No regrets on my end..

I'm a writer and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The community is pretty good and there's always something going on.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a electrician who relocated here from Atlanta about 1 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and retirement.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Decent public transit for the size
- Four distinct seasons

Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Homeless population growing downtown

Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are developing, gas is average.

Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Definitely worth checking out..

We moved here with our family and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Schools in Westside area are hit or miss. Kids love it here.

I've been living here for 7 years and I'd say I love the pace of life here. The nightlife is average compared to other places I've lived. Overall Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
