Remote worker thinking about Mankato

You can expect to pay around $1,089 for rent here. The unemployment rate is 3.4%, which is pretty low. It's a a smaller city city with about 44,882 people. Poverty rate is 10.1%, which is around average. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The weather takes some getting used to. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. it was the best decision I ever made. Compared to Austin it's underrated.

Public transit is pretty good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I have mixed feelings honestly.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a real estate agent, 28, moved here 14 years ago from Houston. I've lived in North and Downtown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Close to major attractions
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Urban sprawl is real
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The food scene situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- North: Great for singles. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- Downtown: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Houston, everything felt challenging. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $50K-$80K here.

**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

As someone who grew up here, it's not perfect but it works for me. A lot has changed in the past few years though. housing market used to be much stable but now it's pretty good.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.

I've been here 1 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is cultural scene. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the traffic is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is hit or miss.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Downtown side vs the Meadowbrook side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

We moved here with our family and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Schools in Midtown area are excellent. Kids love it here.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem challenging.

I've been here 12 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the housing market is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is surprisingly good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Old Town side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

No regrets on my end..
