Hey, My family moved here when I was a kid. With a population of 41,690, Marion is a smaller city. It's a a smaller city city with about 41,690 people. Homes are going for about $230,800 on average. The unemployment rate is 2.3%, which is pretty low. The city has invested a lot in new development. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Should I be concerned? The weather takes some getting used to. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The walkability is genuinely excellent and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (Lakewood) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Dating scene is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.
I've been here 11 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is walkability. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is hit or miss.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the North side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
