Moving to Marlene Village with kids -good idea?

Not sure if this has been asked before, but I'm single, late 40s, and The median home value here is around $499,300, which is pretty steep. Median household income is $87,335, which feels pretty solid for the area. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Has anyone dealt with this? It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

We moved here with our family and I love the pace of life here. Schools in Meadowbrook area are improving. Kids love it here.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a writer, 24, moved here 2 years ago from LA. I've lived in Old Town and Greenfield, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Decent public transit for the size
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Active local events and festivals
4. The people are generally better than expected - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Rising rent and home prices
3. The cultural scene situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Old Town: Great for remote workers. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- Greenfield: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from LA, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $40K-$130K here.

**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Public transit is tough here. You'll probably need a car for most things. the quality of life is solid.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in West for 14 years. Moved from Atlanta for a fresh start. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is challenging. We bought in 2024 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. The market is competitive but not impossible.

**Employment:**
legal is strong here. construction is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are affordable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I genuinely enjoy living here. The outdoor scene is hit or miss - we have hiking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. West schools are improving. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Not a lot of cultural diversity. Chain restaurants dominate. And walkability can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For retirees, I'd say this is a 5/10. Happy to answer more specific questions.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Public transit is surprisingly good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.

I've been here 14 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the healthcare is legit. And if you're into running, this place is excellent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Fairview side vs the Maple Ridge side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

No regrets on my end..

The food scene here is decent. Tons of great Mediterranean places. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

As someone who grew up here, I'm still on the fence after all this time. A lot has changed in the past few years though. traffic used to be much competitive but now it's improving.

Bought a house here in 2023 and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Property values have gone up a bit since then.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a teacher who relocated here from New York about 10 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and quality of life.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good internet infrastructure
- Active local events and festivals
- Lots of family-friendly activities

Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Limited entertainment options

Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are competitive, gas is tough.

Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Would recommend to anyone considering it..
