Curious what people think. Just moved here 8 months ago and Median household income is $100,362, which feels pretty solid for the area. Poverty rate is 5.2%, which is pretty low. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The suburbs are where most families end up. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The city has invested a lot in new development. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

Public transit is pretty good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.
I've been here 10 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into golfing, this place is hit or miss.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Westside side vs the Pine Hills side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 8 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Downtown. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in engineering. If you're in consulting you might struggle.
People: Generally tough. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: solid. Tons of options if you like BBQ.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

We moved here with our family and it's not perfect but it works for me. Schools in Springfield area are average. Kids love it here.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value job market, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely hit or miss and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Maple Ridge) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. school system is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
