Hey everyone, With a population of 27,135, Mason City is a smaller city. Household incomes average around $62,369 in Mason City. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The city has invested a lot in new development. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Should I be concerned? It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The city has invested a lot in new development. The suburbs are where most families end up. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

Bought a house here in 2015 and it's been a really good experience overall. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value healthcare, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely underrated and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Meadowbrook) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Denver, be prepared for the culture shock. school system is completely different here. And Chain restaurants dominate.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely better than expected and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Uptown) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Francisco, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.
