Best and worst neighborhoods in Matthews

Hi all, Rent is about $1,670/month for a decent place. The unemployment rate is 1.4%, which is pretty low. The median home value here is around $406,800, which is pretty steep. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The suburbs are where most families end up. Property taxes are high but you get good services. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

Pros:
- Easy commute
- Strong sense of community
- Plenty of shopping options

Cons:
- Traffic can be terrible
- Limited nightlife
- Sprawl everywhere
- Not very walkable
- Lack of diversity
Worth the trade-offs? The city has invested a lot in new development. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The suburbs are where most families end up. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The weather takes some getting used to. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The suburbs are where most families end up. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The city has invested a lot in new development. The food scene here is surprisingly good. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Meadowbrook for 14 years. Moved from LA for retirement. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is better than expected. We bought in 2019 at k and it's now worth about the same than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals.

**Employment:**
real estate is strong here. healthcare is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are competitive for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's improved dramatically in recent years. The outdoor scene is challenging - we have national forests within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Meadowbrook schools are solid. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Winters are long and cold. Can feel isolated. And healthcare can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For remote workers, I'd say this is a 9/10. Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Came here for retirement and stayed because I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The cost of living is honestly tough and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

engineering is strong here. hospitality is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are developing for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's improved dramatically in recent years. The outdoor scene is decent - we have beaches within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**

**The Bad:**

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a real estate agent, 33, moved here 11 years ago from Nashville. I've lived in Midtown and North, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Low crime in most neighborhoods
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Good internet infrastructure
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Road conditions need improvement
3. The housing market situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Midtown: Great for young professionals. tough vibes, walkable.
- North: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Nashville, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are established. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $90K-$80K here.

**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I've been in South for 9 years. Moved from Phoenix for quality of life. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is hit or miss. We bought in 2024 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. Lots of new construction which should help.

**Employment:**
hospitality is strong here. tech is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are wild for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I have mixed feelings honestly. The outdoor scene is challenging - we have national forests within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. South schools are decent. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Summers can be brutally hot. Chain restaurants dominate. And housing market can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For retirees, I'd say this is a 8/10. Good luck with whatever you decide.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. it was the best decision I ever made. Compared to Boston it's solid.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a writer who relocated here from San Diego about 9 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and retirement.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Strong job market in several industries
- Lots of new development happening

Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Road conditions need improvement

Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are wild, gas is challenging.

Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value walkability, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely pretty good and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (Maple Ridge) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Minneapolis, be prepared for the culture shock. food scene is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are challenging, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.
