Anyone else feel this way? Military spouse here. The median home value here is around $406,800, which is pretty steep. With a population of 29,959, Matthews is a smaller city. Homes are going for about $406,800 on average. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Should I be concerned? Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The weather takes some getting used to. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The city has invested a lot in new development. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

Used to live on the South side, now on the Uptown side. Completely different vibe. it's exactly what I was looking for.

We moved here with our family and it was the best decision I ever made. Schools in Eastside area are underrated. Kids love it here.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.
I've been here 3 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is cultural scene. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into running, this place is hit or miss.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Eastside side vs the Pine Hills side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
No regrets on my end..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a nurse, 53, moved here 13 years ago from Boston. I've lived in Downtown and Fairview, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Strong job market in several industries
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Active local events and festivals
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited high-paying job options
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The walkability situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Downtown: Great for families. improving vibes, walkable.
- Fairview: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Boston, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $50K-$70K here.
**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
