Best and worst neighborhoods in Mayagüez zona urbana
Longtime lurker here, I'm retired and Poverty rate is 47.3%, which is higher than I expected. With a population of 59,427, Mayag--ez zona urbana is a smaller city. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Anyone in a similar situation? There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The suburbs are where most families end up. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The weather takes some getting used to. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The city has invested a lot in new development. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The weather takes some getting used to. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

Moved here from Boston about 8 years ago. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Still getting used to food scene but Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.
I've been here 10 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Westside side vs the Downtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's improved dramatically in recent years. No regrets on my end..
