I'm a teacher here and Household incomes average around $47,384 in Mayo. You can expect to pay around $591 for rent here. Rent is about $591/month for a decent place. The median home value here is around $159,200, which is actually reasonable. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The food scene here is surprisingly good.
Pros:
- Nice parks and trails
- Good schools
- Diverse community
- Strong sense of community
Cons:
- Not very walkable
- Limited dining options
- Mosquitoes and humidity
- Limited cultural events
- Not enough green space
Anyone in a similar situation? Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The weather takes some getting used to. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem challenging.
I've been here 2 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is improving.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Lakewood side vs the Greenfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Hope this helps!.

I've lived in Westside for about 9 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I love the pace of life here. When I first moved here from Nashville, I was surprised by community vibe. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Active local events and festivals
- The safety scene is improving
The downsides:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Road conditions need improvement
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for young professionals. Definitely worth checking out..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value community vibe, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. community vibe is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a software engineer who relocated here from Salt Lake City about 9 years ago. The main reasons were family and family.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Active local events and festivals
Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are stable, gas is excellent.
Socially, I love the pace of life here. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. it's exactly what I was looking for. Compared to Nashville it's underrated.

As someone who grew up here, it was the best decision I ever made. A lot has changed in the past few years though. traffic used to be much wild but now it's hit or miss.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Highland for 14 years. Moved from Portland for retirement. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is improving. We bought in 2019 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable.
**Employment:**
education is strong here. construction is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are wild for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
I love the pace of life here. The outdoor scene is solid - we have rivers within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Highland schools are average. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Not a lot of cultural diversity. Limited shopping options. And housing market can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For retirees, I'd say this is a 5/10. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.
