McAlester quality of life -am I missing something?
Hey, Median household income is $48,044, which feels on the lower side for the area. Average temperature is around 62--F, so the weather is moderate. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Am I wrong here? The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

The food scene here is decent. Tons of great craft beer places. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a nurse who relocated here from Raleigh about 9 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Affordable housing options
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Can feel isolated
Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are growing, gas is improving.
Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Feel free to reach out with questions..

Public transit is excellent here. You'll probably need a car for most things. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.
I've been here 13 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the dating scene is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Highland side vs the Greenfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 8 years ago from Seattle and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Fairview. It's improving for what you get.
Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in finance. If you're in government you might struggle.
People: Generally pretty good. It took about 7 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like Thai.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Bought a house here in 2016 and I'm still on the fence after all this time. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

My experience has been mostly positive. I genuinely enjoy living here. The only thing I'd watch out for is community vibe. Other than that, No regrets on my end..
