Anyone else love living in McCalla?

Hi all, Median household income is $83,782, which feels pretty solid for the area. The unemployment rate is 1.5%, which is pretty low. With a population of 13,939, McCalla is a small town. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a social worker who relocated here from Portland about 11 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and a job opportunity.

Pros I've experienced:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Active local events and festivals
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Chain restaurants dominate

Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are affordable, gas is better than expected.

Socially, I love the pace of life here. Feel free to reach out with questions..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is dating scene. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Worth doing your research before committing.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.

I've been here 14 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into hiking, this place is surprisingly good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The West side vs the South side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a real estate agent, 54, moved here 10 years ago from Tampa. I've lived in The Heights and Westside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Strong job market in several industries
2. Good airport with direct flights
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally better than expected - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The walkability situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- The Heights: Great for retirees. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- Westside: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Tampa, everything felt average. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $90K-$70K here.

**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Hot take but there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. I know a lot of people disagree but after 9 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.

I've been here 9 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is tough.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Highland side vs the Old Town side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Definitely worth checking out..
