Born and raised here. Rent is about $793/month for a decent place. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Anyone in a similar situation? Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.
I've been here 3 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is food scene. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is tough.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Old Town side vs the The Heights side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 13 years ago from Denver and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Greenfield. It's decent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in legal. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.
People: Generally solid. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.
