McDonough is underrated, change my mind

Hey, I'm a college student here and Household incomes average around $77,734 in McDonough. Rent is about $1,576/month for a decent place. Crime rate is something to consider -McDonough sits at 274.0 per 100K. The unemployment rate is 4.1%, which is about average. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Does this match your experience? Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The city has invested a lot in new development.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value job market, you'll love it. The school system is genuinely excellent and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (West) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Atlanta, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.

I've been here 9 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is food scene. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the dating scene is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is challenging.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Greenfield side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Hope this helps!.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is outdoor recreation. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Worth doing your research before committing.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 2 years ago from Austin and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Oak Park. It's challenging for what you get.

Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in engineering you might struggle.

People: Generally decent. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Indian.

Happy to answer more specific questions..

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Internet is tough in most areas.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. it's been a really good experience overall. Compared to Portland it's pretty good.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a accountant who relocated here from Raleigh about 15 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and retirement.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Decent public transit for the size
- Lots of new development happening

Cons that are real:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Dating scene is rough

Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are stable, gas is excellent.

Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Hope this helps!.
