What surprised you most about McHenry?

Longtime lurker here, Been living here since 2005. Median household income is $86,865, which feels pretty solid for the area. The unemployment rate is 2.4%, which is pretty low. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Would love some local perspective. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

I'm a writer and I've found I love the pace of life here. The community is decent and there's always something going on.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's not perfect but it works for me. Feel free to reach out with questions..

We moved here with our family and I have mixed feelings honestly. Schools in South area are average. Kids love it here.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a nurse who relocated here from Boston about 4 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and my partner's job.

Pros I've experienced:
- Lots of new development happening
- Affordable housing options
- Strong sense of community

Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Chain restaurants dominate

Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are established, gas is better than expected.

Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a real estate agent, 44, moved here 6 years ago from San Diego. I've lived in Meadowbrook and The Heights, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Good internet infrastructure
3. Active local events and festivals
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Not a lot of cultural diversity
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The nightlife situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Meadowbrook: Great for families. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- The Heights: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Diego, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $70K-$120K here.

**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
