Not sure if this has been asked before, but I'm a college student here and Poverty rate is 5.3%, which is pretty low. You can expect to pay around $1,029 for rent here. The food scene here is surprisingly good. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Worth the trade-offs? Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. I've lived in West for about 14 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's not perfect but it works for me. When I first moved here from LA, I was surprised by weather. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Four distinct seasons
- The school system scene is tough
The downsides:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Limited high-paying job options
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for couples. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

I've been here 13 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is walkability. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the dating scene is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is pretty good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Meadowbrook side vs the Midtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

**The Bad:**
