What surprised you most about Melbourne?

Curious what people think. My family moved here when I was a kid. The median home value here is around $203,000, which is actually reasonable. Average temperature is around 57--F, so the weather is moderate. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Would love some local perspective. Appreciate any input. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The food scene here is surprisingly good. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a writer who relocated here from Houston about 10 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good healthcare facilities

Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Nightlife is limited

Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are affordable, gas is tough.

Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Hope this helps!.

Bought a house here in 2016 and it was the best decision I ever made. Property values have gone about the same since then.

Hot take but I'm still on the fence after all this time. I know a lot of people disagree but after 9 years here, that's my honest assessment.
