What I wish I knew before living in Melrose Park

Curious what people think. Born and raised here. The median home value here is around $265,000, which seems about average. It's a a small town city with about 24,513 people. With a population of 24,513, Melrose Park is a small town. Rent is about $1,194/month for a decent place. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Am I wrong here? People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

Used to live on the Downtown side, now on the South side. Completely different vibe. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 15 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's improved dramatically in recent years. When I first moved here from LA, I was surprised by cultural scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Strong job market in several industries
- The nightlife scene is hit or miss

The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Homeless population growing downtown

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for young professionals. Definitely worth checking out..
