Planning a move to Melville -neighborhoods?

I'm a teacher here and Homes are going for about $778,400 on average. With a population of 19,187, Melville is a small town. The unemployment rate is 5.3%, which is about average. Median household income is $155,675, which feels pretty solid for the area. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Anyone in a similar situation? The weather takes some getting used to. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The school system is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Eastside) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Nashville, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Bugs and humidity in summer.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Happy to answer more specific questions..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a data analyst, 57, moved here 7 years ago from LA. I've lived in South and Midtown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Close to major attractions
2. Affordable housing options
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Urban sprawl is real
3. The weather situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- South: Great for couples. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- Midtown: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from LA, everything felt average. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $90K-$120K here.

**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
