I'm a college student here and Poverty rate is 2.1%, which is pretty low. The unemployment rate is 1.3%, which is pretty low. Average temperature is around 46--F, so expect cold winters. You can expect to pay around $2,271 for rent here. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Internet is hit or miss in most areas.

We moved here with our family and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Schools in Highland area are surprisingly good. Kids love it here.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is healthcare. it's exactly what I was looking for. Worth doing your research before committing.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.
I've been here 11 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the nightlife is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is tough.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Cedar Grove side vs the Riverside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Hope this helps!.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in East. It's challenging for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in real estate. If you're in real estate you might struggle.
People: Generally improving. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: decent. Tons of options if you like craft beer.
Feel free to reach out with questions..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want weather, then yeah this place is great. But if weather matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value traffic, you'll love it. The school system is genuinely underrated and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (Fairview) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Tampa, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from Phoenix and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Oak Park. It's challenging for what you get.
Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in consulting. If you're in marketing you might struggle.
People: Generally underrated. It took about 17 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like seafood.
No regrets on my end..

If you value safety, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely average and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Eastside) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a lawyer who relocated here from Minneapolis about 8 years ago. The main reasons were school and work.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Decent public transit for the size
- Good internet infrastructure
Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Winters are long and cold
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are stable, gas is average.
Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Hope this helps!.
