Pros and cons of Mercer Island after 9 years

First post here. I'm originally from New York and Rent is about $2,464/month for a decent place. Poverty rate is 2.8%, which is pretty low. You can expect to pay around $2,464 for rent here. The median home value here is around $1,884,200, which is pretty steep. Median household income is $202,359, which feels pretty solid for the area. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

Pros:
- Friendly people
- Growing food scene
- Good internet infrastructure

Cons:
- Traffic can be terrible
- Sprawl everywhere
- Poor road conditions
Does this match your experience? Looking forward to hearing from you all. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a HR manager who relocated here from Baltimore about 12 years ago. The main reasons were weather and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Nice parks and green spaces

Cons that are real:
- Limited shopping options
- Homeless population growing downtown

Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are manageable, gas is tough.

Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. No regrets on my end..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want dating scene, then yeah this place is great. But if food scene matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a chef who relocated here from Portland about 5 years ago. The main reasons were family and school.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Lots of new development happening
- Strong sense of community

Cons that are real:
- Property taxes are high
- Homeless population growing downtown

Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are pricey, gas is challenging.

Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a real estate agent, 55, moved here 2 years ago from Nashville. I've lived in Cedar Grove and Oak Park, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Good schools in most areas
3. Low crime in most neighborhoods
4. The people are generally tough - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Property taxes are high
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The job market situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Cedar Grove: Great for young professionals. decent vibes, walkable.
- Oak Park: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Nashville, everything felt pretty good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is growing. You can live comfortably on $40K-$80K here.

**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Used to live on the West side, now on the South side. Completely different vibe. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value public transit, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely hit or miss and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Pine Hills) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Miami, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
