The good and bad of living in Mercer Island

Random thought, My family moved here when I was a kid. Crime rate is something to consider -Mercer Island sits at 30.3 per 100K. With a population of 25,282, Mercer Island is a smaller city. You can expect to pay around $2,464 for rent here. Average temperature is around 54--F, so expect cold winters. The weather takes some getting used to. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Pros:
- Great weather
- Strong sense of community
- Good internet infrastructure
- Plenty of shopping options

Cons:
- Limited public transit
- Cold winters
- Few job opportunities in some fields
- Mosquitoes and humidity
Is this normal for Mercer Island? The suburbs are where most families end up. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The food scene here is surprisingly good. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The city has invested a lot in new development. Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value school system, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (Maple Ridge) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Seattle, be prepared for the culture shock. cost of living is completely different here. And Limited high-paying job options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've been living here for 12 years and I'd say the quality of life is solid. The walkability is better than expected compared to other places I've lived. Overall Happy to answer more specific questions..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want pet-friendliness, then yeah this place is great. But if food scene matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.
