Longtime lurker here, I'm a college student here and Homes are going for about $221,600 on average. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Anyone in a similar situation?

I've lived in Highland for about 4 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
the quality of life is solid. When I first moved here from Charlotte, I was surprised by pet-friendliness. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Four distinct seasons
- The dating scene scene is better than expected
The downsides:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Dating scene is rough
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for remote workers. No regrets on my end..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a HR manager who relocated here from LA about 12 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Decent public transit for the size
- Lots of new development happening
Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Homeless population growing downtown
Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are stable, gas is average.
Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Definitely worth checking out..

Public transit is improving here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's not perfect but it works for me.
