Raising a family in Meridian — thoughts?
I grew up here but left for a while. Median household income is $98,686, which feels pretty solid for the area. The unemployment rate is 1.7%, which is pretty low. Average temperature is around 54°F, so expect cold winters. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.
Pros:
- Affordable cost of living
- Friendly people
- Low crime in most areas
- Easy commute
- Plenty of shopping options
Cons:
- Limited nightlife
- Lack of diversity
- Mosquitoes and humidity
Should I be concerned? Property taxes are high but you get good services. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The city has invested a lot in new development. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.
