Day-to-day life in Merrillville, IN

Random thought, It's a a smaller city city with about 36,343 people. Poverty rate is 11.5%, which is around average. Average temperature is around 50--F, so expect cold winters. Crime rate is something to consider -Merrillville sits at 144.0 per 100K. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Worth the trade-offs? The food scene here is surprisingly good. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value pet-friendliness, you'll love it. The weather is genuinely pretty good and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (Pine Hills) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Boston, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Dating scene is rough.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
