Thinking about relocating to Metuchen from Kansas City

Born and raised here. You can expect to pay around $2,019 for rent here. Homes are going for about $565,400 on average. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a real estate agent, 49, moved here 9 years ago from Minneapolis. I've lived in North and Uptown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good healthcare facilities
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Nightlife is limited
3. The cost of living situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- North: Great for singles. decent vibes, walkable.
- Uptown: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Minneapolis, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $50K-$110K here.

**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a social worker, 43, moved here 5 years ago from Houston. I've lived in Riverside and Maple Ridge, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Nice parks and green spaces
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Property taxes are high
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The school system situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Riverside: Great for remote workers. surprisingly good vibes, walkable.
- Maple Ridge: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Houston, everything felt challenging. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $50K-$130K here.

**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I've been living here for 4 years and I'd say I have mixed feelings honestly. The community vibe is tough compared to other places I've lived. Overall Good luck with whatever you decide..

Public transit is surprisingly good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is safety. it was the best decision I ever made. Worth doing your research before committing.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely average and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Springfield) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.

I've been here 10 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is safety. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the housing market is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is tough.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The The Heights side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

No regrets on my end..

I work in retail here and it's not perfect but it works for me. The job market for my field is solid. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Came here for my partner's job and stayed because it's exactly what I was looking for. The dating scene is honestly tough and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

If you value safety, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely pretty good and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (The Heights) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Salt Lake City, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Limited shopping options.
