The good and bad of living in Michigan City

Alright, Crime rate is something to consider -Michigan City sits at 317.4 per 100K. The median home value here is around $129,000, which is actually reasonable. Median household income is $52,979, which feels on the lower side for the area. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The weather takes some getting used to. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from Boston and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Lakewood. It's hit or miss for what you get.

Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in construction. If you're in tech you might struggle.

People: Generally challenging. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: average. Tons of options if you like seafood.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a real estate agent who relocated here from Salt Lake City about 8 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and quality of life.

Pros I've experienced:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Good healthcare facilities
- Four distinct seasons

Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Can feel isolated

Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are pricey, gas is excellent.

Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Feel free to reach out with questions..
