Raising a family in Mill City -thoughts?

Anyone else feel this way? I'm a nurse at the local hospital and The unemployment rate is 7.3%, which is concerning. The median home value here is around $289,900, which seems about average. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Has anyone dealt with this?

Hot take but it's improved dramatically in recent years. I know a lot of people disagree but after 2 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a HR manager who relocated here from Atlanta about 15 years ago. The main reasons were school and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Four distinct seasons
- Good airport with direct flights
- Strong sense of community

Cons that are real:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Far from beaches/mountains

Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are established, gas is decent.

Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. No regrets on my end..

I've been living here for 1 years and I'd say it's improved dramatically in recent years. The nightlife is decent compared to other places I've lived. Overall It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Public transit is underrated here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I have mixed feelings honestly.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value community vibe, you'll love it. The school system is genuinely tough and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Old Town) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Dallas, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a sales manager, 45, moved here 13 years ago from Salt Lake City. I've lived in Fairview and Highland, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Decent public transit for the size
2. Good internet infrastructure
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally challenging - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited shopping options
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The public transit situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Fairview: Great for young professionals. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- Highland: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Salt Lake City, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $40K-$120K here.

**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Internet is improving in most areas.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a physical therapist who relocated here from Austin about 3 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and retirement.

Pros I've experienced:
- Lots of new development happening
- Affordable housing options
- Strong sense of community

Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Not a lot of cultural diversity

Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are reasonable, gas is average.

Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Definitely worth checking out..

Public transit is solid here. You'll probably need a car for most things. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.
