Random thought, I grew up here but left for a while. Crime rate is something to consider -Mill Creek East sits at 126.5 per 100K. You can expect to pay around $3,013 for rent here. The weather takes some getting used to. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The weather takes some getting used to. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The city has invested a lot in new development. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value food scene, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely hit or miss and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Maple Ridge) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Rising rent and home prices.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Weather-wise, the summers are challenging and winters are affordable. You get used to it after the first year.

My experience has been mostly positive. I have mixed feelings honestly. The only thing I'd watch out for is community vibe. Other than that, Feel free to reach out with questions..

Public transit is better than expected here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I love the pace of life here.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Oak Park. It's surprisingly good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in legal. If you're in real estate you might struggle.
People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: solid. Tons of options if you like Italian.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's exactly what I was looking for. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Bought a house here in 2018 and I'm still on the fence after all this time. Property values have gone up significantly since then.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a project manager who relocated here from Portland about 11 years ago. The main reasons were school and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Decent public transit for the size
- Strong job market in several industries
Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Limited shopping options
Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are affordable, gas is surprisingly good.
Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. It's not for everyone but it works for us..
