Why I chose Millington over bigger cities

Hey everyone, My family moved here when I was a kid. Rent is about $1,059/month for a decent place. Household incomes average around $51,695 in Millington. Average temperature is around 61--F, so the weather is moderate. The unemployment rate is 4.6%, which is about average. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Would love some local perspective. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The safety is genuinely pretty good and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Uptown) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Phoenix, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Rising rent and home prices.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Compared to Raleigh it's improving.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are better than expected, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Definitely worth checking out..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a sales manager, 54, moved here 7 years ago from Portland. I've lived in Midtown and Cedar Grove, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Growing food and restaurant scene
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally challenging - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Nightlife is limited
2. Can feel isolated
3. The safety situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Midtown: Great for families. underrated vibes, walkable.
- Cedar Grove: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Portland, everything felt average. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $50K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Greenfield for 1 years. Moved from San Diego for retirement. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is tough. We bought in 2024 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts.

**Employment:**
real estate is strong here. education is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are manageable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I have mixed feelings honestly. The outdoor scene is better than expected - we have biking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Greenfield schools are better than expected. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Traffic during rush hour is rough. Summers can be brutally hot. And safety can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For retirees, I'd say this is a 9/10. Hope this helps!. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Bought a house here in 2020 and I love the pace of life here. Property values have gone up significantly since then.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want outdoor recreation, then yeah this place is great. But if dating scene matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.

I've been here 2 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is pet-friendliness. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into hiking, this place is average.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Cedar Grove side vs the Lakewood side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

No regrets on my end..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a data analyst who relocated here from Seattle about 9 years ago. The main reasons were work and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Low crime in most neighborhoods

Cons that are real:
- Can feel isolated
- Limited entertainment options

Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are developing, gas is surprisingly good.

Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
