Longtime lurker here, I'm a nurse at the local hospital and Rent is about $1,041/month for a decent place. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Am I wrong here? Appreciate any input. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's not perfect, but the community is solid.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.
I've been here 10 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The The Heights side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from Nashville and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Uptown. It's hit or miss for what you get.
Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in construction. If you're in construction you might struggle.
People: Generally underrated. It took about 17 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Korean.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value school system, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely underrated and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. pet-friendliness is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

But if you're coming from Phoenix, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.

I've lived in The Heights for about 8 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from San Diego, I was surprised by weather. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Decent public transit for the size
- The job market scene is surprisingly good
The downsides:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Limited entertainment options
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for couples. Happy to answer more specific questions..
