Hey everyone, Been living here since 2009. It's a a small town city with about 15,637 people. Average temperature is around 47--F, so expect cold winters. With a population of 15,637, Mitchell is a small town. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The food scene here is surprisingly good. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Am I overthinking this? I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Background: I'm a lawyer, 31, moved here 9 years ago from Seattle. I've lived in Meadowbrook and Highland, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Affordable housing options
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally decent - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The walkability situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Meadowbrook: Great for retirees. average vibes, walkable.
- Highland: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
