Been meaning to ask this. We're a young couple and The unemployment rate is 2.3%, which is pretty low. Median household income is $45,821, which feels on the lower side for the area. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The weather takes some getting used to. Would love some local perspective. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The suburbs are where most families end up. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The weather takes some getting used to. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

Weather-wise, the summers are decent and winters are manageable. You get used to it after the first year.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a software engineer who relocated here from Portland about 1 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and a job opportunity.
Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good internet infrastructure
- Active local events and festivals
Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Can feel isolated
Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are manageable, gas is average.
Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a electrician who relocated here from Raleigh about 14 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good schools in most areas
- Close to major attractions
Cons that are real:
- Can feel isolated
- Homeless population growing downtown
Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are wild, gas is tough.
Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. No regrets on my end..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from Portland and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Lakewood. It's decent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in engineering. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 7 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like sushi.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is job market. I have mixed feelings honestly. Worth doing your research before committing.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 2 years ago from Baltimore and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in West. It's improving for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in legal. If you're in retail you might struggle.
People: Generally excellent. It took about 7 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Asian.

I've lived in South for about 10 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Houston, I was surprised by nightlife. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- The walkability scene is surprisingly good
The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Dating scene is rough
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for retirees. No regrets on my end..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are hit or miss, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I genuinely enjoy living here. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.
I've been here 7 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is hit or miss.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Greenfield side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Feel free to reach out with questions..

Came here for work and stayed because it's exactly what I was looking for. The housing market is honestly tough and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
