Rent is about $817/month for a decent place. Homes are going for about $119,300 on average. The median home value here is around $119,300, which is actually reasonable. The weather takes some getting used to. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Property taxes are high but you get good services. I've lived in Meadowbrook for about 4 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it exceeded my expectations. When I first moved here from Dallas, I was surprised by housing market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Decent public transit for the size
- The housing market scene is tough
The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Road conditions need improvement
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for retirees. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a real estate agent who relocated here from Charlotte about 3 years ago. The main reasons were weather and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Diverse dining options
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Property taxes are high
- Limited entertainment options
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are manageable, gas is better than expected.
Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Feel free to reach out with questions..
