I've lived in Uptown for about 10 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

Background: I'm a accountant, 48, moved here 4 years ago from San Francisco. I've lived in Old Town and Greenfield, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 14 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is pet-friendliness. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the housing market is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is better than expected.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the Maple Ridge side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..
