What's it really like living in Montauk?

Been meaning to ask this. Been living here since 2007. You can expect to pay around $2,061 for rent here. Average temperature is around 53--F, so expect cold winters. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Worth the trade-offs? There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The suburbs are where most families end up. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

Bought a house here in 2016 and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Property values have gone about the same since then.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a nurse who relocated here from Portland about 15 years ago. The main reasons were family and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good healthcare facilities
- Strong sense of community

Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Limited shopping options

Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are growing, gas is underrated.

Socially, the quality of life is solid. Happy to answer more specific questions..

I've been living here for 11 years and I'd say the quality of life is solid. The safety is average compared to other places I've lived. Overall Hope this helps!.
