Moving to Montclair with kids -good idea?

Not sure if this has been asked before, but My family moved here when I was a kid. The unemployment rate is 3.6%, which is pretty low. Poverty rate is 13.7%, which is around average. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Does this match your experience? It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely pretty good and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Westside) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. community vibe is completely different here. And Chain restaurants dominate.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

The food scene here is decent. Tons of great craft beer places. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want outdoor recreation, then yeah this place is great. But if outdoor recreation matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.
