Quick question about Montclair

Longtime lurker here, My family moved here when I was a kid. The unemployment rate is 3.6%, which is pretty low. You can expect to pay around $1,759 for rent here. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

I've been living here for 13 years and I'd say I love the pace of life here. The walkability is solid compared to other places I've lived. Overall No regrets on my end..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value housing market, you'll love it. The food scene is genuinely pretty good and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Pine Hills) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Pittsburgh, be prepared for the culture shock. school system is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a teacher, 24, moved here 7 years ago from Chicago. I've lived in Greenfield and Riverside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Growing food and restaurant scene
3. Nice parks and green spaces
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited entertainment options
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The cost of living situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Greenfield: Great for remote workers. hit or miss vibes, walkable.
- Riverside: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Chicago, everything felt average. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are established. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $80K-$130K here.

**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

We moved here with our family and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Schools in East area are underrated. Kids love it here.

As someone who grew up here, it's improved dramatically in recent years. A lot has changed in the past few years though. school system used to be much competitive but now it's tough.
