Pros and cons of Moodus after 8 years

Hey everyone, Average temperature is around 52--F, so expect cold winters. Homes are going for about $259,000 on average. Rent is about $1,151/month for a decent place. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

Pros:
- Affordable cost of living
- Nice parks and trails
- Lots of new development

Cons:
- Limited public transit
- High property taxes
- Boring for young people
- Poor road conditions
- Limited cultural events
Am I wrong here? Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. My experience has been mostly positive. I love the pace of life here. The only thing I'd watch out for is school system. Other than that, Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a project manager, 44, moved here 11 years ago from LA. I've lived in Maple Ridge and Pine Hills, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Good internet infrastructure
3. Four distinct seasons
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Dating scene is rough
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The outdoor recreation situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Maple Ridge: Great for remote workers. average vibes, walkable.
- Pine Hills: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from LA, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $70K-$110K here.

**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. I genuinely enjoy living here. Compared to Phoenix it's pretty good.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is weather. it's not perfect but it works for me. Worth doing your research before committing.

I've lived in Old Town for about 15 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I genuinely enjoy living here. When I first moved here from San Diego, I was surprised by cultural scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good healthcare facilities
- The housing market scene is excellent

The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Nightlife is limited

Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for singles. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Public transit is average here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's exactly what I was looking for.

I'm a social worker and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. The community is average and there's always something going on.
